What are the roles within scrum?

The three main roles in scrum are the Product Owner, the Scrum Master and the Scrum Team. The Product Owner is up front, determines which tasks are most important and has the most contact with the customer. Scrum Teams usually consist of 3 to 9 FTEs with different skill sets that complement and sometimes overlap.

The Scrum Master plays an important role as a facilitator of the scrum process, but what does Scrum Master mean and what does a Scrum Master do all day? This person ensures that the team can work well by solving problems, improving team collaboration and following Agile principles. Together with the Product Owner and developers, they form a cohesive team that is committed to delivering quality products.

The Product Owner’s job is to ensure the customer’s requirements and wishes are met and passed on to the team. This is done through user stories that are captured in the product backlog. The tasks that are most important are moved from the backlog to the sprint backlog. This determines which tasks will be completed during a specific sprint.

The Scrum Team is a self-managing team with all the necessary knowledge and skills to get the job done. The diverse backgrounds of the team members allow them to be flexible, creative and productive. The team works on products in short, repetitive steps and uses feedback to regularly check progress and make improvements.

Scrum also offers a logical and flexible approach when many changes are expected to occur during the process.
